Preventive Care

Maintaining preventive dental care is crucial for a lifetime of oral health, particularly starting at a young age. By implementing good oral hygiene practices at home and scheduling regular dental checkups, you can help your child maintain a bright and healthy smile. Here are some simple steps to prevent plaque build-up and cavities:

  1. Ensure your child brushes her teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use fluoride toothpaste to effectively remove food particles and plaque from the tooth surfaces. It’s also important for her to brush the top surface of her tongue to eliminate additional plaque-causing food particles and maintain fresh breath.

  2. Encourage your child to clean between her teeth by flossing at least once a day. Additionally, using a mouthwash can help eliminate bacteria and freshen her breath. Decay-causing bacteria tend to linger between teeth, where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing and using mouthwash will assist in removing plaque and food particles from these areas, including under the gum line.

  3. Promote a balanced diet for your child and try to limit the consumption of sugary treats. Nutritious foods like raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese, and fruit can contribute to maintaining a healthy smile.

  4. Schedule regular checkups with your child’s dentist every six months to ensure professional teeth cleaning and comprehensive oral examinations.

  5. Inquire with your pediatric dentist about dental sealants, which are protective plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These sealants can effectively prevent decay, particularly in areas where it commonly occurs.

  6. If your child engages in sports activities, consult your dentist about specially designed mouthguards that offer protection for her smile.

  7. If it has been six months since your child’s last dental checkup, don’t hesitate to contact our practice and schedule her next appointment.

By following these guidelines, you can help your child establish and maintain good oral health habits for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
